The refined form of the present vase, with its elegant contours and lack of surface ornamentation, focuses attention on the purity of the milky white stone and employs the restrained aesthetic that continued from the Qianlong Emperor's reign into the subsequent century. For a Qianlong period white jade precedent with the same handles and knop, but with the slender baluster body set over a waisted foot, see one sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29th April 1992, lot 616; a related white jade example with a slightly broader baluster body sold in these rooms, 27th February 1981, lot 413; and a third 18th century white jade vase and cover with similar proportions to the present, but with mythical beasts carved at the foot of the vase and the knop in the form of a qilin, sold in our London rooms, 7th June 2000, lot 67.

Closely related white jade baluster vases and covers from the 19th century include a smaller one of rectangular section and with a 'Buddhist lion' knop from the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts sold in these rooms, 15th March 2016, lot 118; a later Qing example sold twice in our Hong Kong rooms, first on 17th November 1988, lot 292, and second, 2nd December 2016, lot 800; and another sold in the same rooms, 6th April 2016, lot 3710.
