Manchester United transfer news: Toby Alderweireld could join Barcelona in January as replacement for Samuel Umtiti

Jose Mourinho wanted United to sign Belgian defender Alderweireld in the summer

MANCHESTER UNITED'S hopes of signing Toby Alderweireld could be dashed with Barcelona planning a shock swoop for the defender in January, according to reports.

The Tottenham centre-back was a key summer target for Jose Mourinho as he looked to resolve the Red Devils' defensive issues.

But Alderweireld remained in North London and has starred for Spurs, while Mourinho has largely blamed United's poor form on not landing his centre-back targets.

And, according to the Daily Mirror, United may have missed their opportunity to sign the Belgian as Barcelona are considering a bid when the transfer window reopens.

The Spanish giants are looking to strengthen their defence with Samuel Umtiti a long-term absentee through injury, and are monitoring Alderweireld.

The 29-year-old has less than a year on his contract at White Hart Lane which may work in Barca's favour.

They have won just one game in their last four and that came against Alderweireld and Tottenham in the Champions League.

Alderweireld's future at White Hart Lane was in doubt last season as he spent much of the campaign on the bench.

But the defender has started all but one of Tottenham's games in the Premier League this season.

Mauricio Pochettino says he ‘expects’ Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Moussa Dembele to stay at Tottenham
