The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has commended the Federal Government for its huge efforts towards provision of potable water to the people of the state, in particular Ilesha town.
Aregbesola added that Ilesha town had been without potable water for 40 years and so expressed great delight that the FG has come to the aid of the people.
The governor gave the commendation when the Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Reng Ochekpe, accompanied by the ministry’s technical officials, inspected the Ilesha dam and paid him a courtesy call at the Government House in Osogbo on February 20.
Aregbesola expressed appreciation to the minister for her unusual interest in the welfare of the people of the state.
He explained that the suffering of the people searching for potable water would become a thing of the past as soon as the project is completed.
He said that while he was mindful of the shared responsibility of the three ties of government in the provision of potable water to the people, he still solicited for more assistance in the reticulation of water from the dam to ensure perfect completion of the project because of the limited funds from the state.
The governor emphasized on the importance of continuing with the second and third phases of the project to ensure the ultimate objective of such huge investment be realized.
Aregbesola said the State Government on its part would complement the FG’s efforts but still needs the support to treat the water and reticulate for public consumption.
He promised the state’s support while soliciting for further partnership with the FG and more of such projects in the state.
Briefing the governor, Ochekpe said it was President Goodluck Jonathan’s passion that all projects should be completed that prompted the revisit of the dam to the benefit of the people.
She added that the President is sincerely committed to embark on projects that will improve the living standard of the people.
She promised the FG’s partnership with state government to ensure full utilization of the dam.
Ochekpe urged the state government to ensure that the water is well treated and be reticulated before distributing to the community in the second and third phases of the project.
“We believe that after completion of first phase of the project, the FG will work with the state government in continuation of the project to the essence that potable water is made available to the people,” she further explained.
She expressed her delight that the project provided jobs for the people in the community, thereby improving their socio-economic lives in line with the job creation policy of the President.
She said that the project site would also be a good place for tourism and called on the state to take full advantage of the potentials of the dam site for the development of the state.
