I worked for American Airlines here in the U.S. in 2005-2007 - NEVER WILL I FLY AMERICAN

Here is what I found out - American doesn't OWN any of their airplanes - they LEASE THE PLANES - I don't know what they are up to in 2011.  What tripped me out was that  though the airplanes are very clean as every night those planes had to be cleaned - the commuter airport in Wisconsin - Madison -I can recall a few planes flying in that were OVER THE WEIGHT LIMIT.

I recall one incident specifically that the pilot was sooo angry as soon as he landed in Madison from Chicago - he demanded that a luggage weight test of every bag be performed as the plane was being offloaded - he stated that he had problems taking off and problems holding the aircraft in the air.  Sure enough the plane was over its weight limit.  EXTREMELY OVER THE WEIGHT LIMIT - The plane was uploaded in Chicago at the corporate location for American.

I was stunned and frightened and I CANCELLED all tickets I had purchased for myself and family members and friends on current and future flights that I had already purchased.  I have never flown with American since. 

So now I hear about this airline with dirty airplanes, ticket sales on the sidewalk to the highest bidder, passengers being loaded from the tarmac and names not matching the manifest.  After hearing these well documented accounts by MORE THAN ONE passenger.  I fear and wonder what maintenance is being regularly performed on the body and engine of the aircraft itself.

Who told you that a plane rocking in the air is a sign of bad plane?

I was on a British Airways flight to London recently and for three hours into the flight of 6 hours - the plane rocked and shook vigorously so much that everyone didnt know what was happening. The only announcement was, keep your seat belts on. There are so many reason a plane will rock and appear to tilt in air - abeg.

As per chachangi having one airplane - what a lie.

Recently - the airline was banned for months from flying because there is a rule that if an airline has only one aircraft, that airline will not be allowed to operate at all. So recently, Chachangi had to lease two addtional planes from Jordan air, and they were allowed to resume flights.

If you are a regular traveller on the abuja Lagos route, you would have seen Jordan Air airplanes - thats been used by Chachangi and they are not old airplanes as the OP will make it out to be.

CHACHANGI has very old aircrafts but I enjoy flying them because their take-off and landing is always smooth.The have one of the best pilots in the industry.
They have not had any case of crashing though their aircrafts are old.

Thats not new to us cos thats how we do our thang in Naija. Everynow and then, people die, we lose planes, some due to turbulence, others from intentional sabotage, no big deal.

We are a country of 150 million, not counting those in the diaspora and those wanna-bes like you, whats losing 200 people here and there. Death by plane is life's change agent for our middle class in Nigeria. It clears out the not too old to make way for the new. If not death by plane due to incompetence, then more likely by road as our roads are death traps, no kidding, and if you are lucky to escape death by those means, you can always count on your family members and relative unhappy with your N 150, 000 per month bank job  to make sure you are dead before your 50th birthday, voodoo, food poison and what not. And the thing though is that we like it that way, thats why we are the happiest people on earth, with life expectancy of 47.

Welcome to Nigeria. You like the rest of us here, may or may not see your 50 th birthday, depending on how often you travel within Nigeria. For the OP, only one more flight with Chachangi and he is a gonner.

As if that was not enough, no sooner than the plane was airborne the pilot came on air with a husky voice. "Ladies and gentle, we will be experiencing some turbulence due to bad weather but that is not a problem[size=18pt] we will just go through it and you all will be alright"[/size]

I've been laughing uncontrollably mostly at your post including the the really funny comments and partly at my own personal experience.

You're not alone homeboy! I flew chanchangi from Lagos to Abj in 2005 and i cant ever forget that experience.

After takeoff, the aircraft's nose did not level up throughout that flight! The nose was constantly up by as much as 20 to 30 degrees. I'm not kidding, just imagine a plane constantly flying in that angle!  We basically "took-off" throughout that flight.

That was one of the scariest days of my life and also one of the funniest.

You will be scared stiff when you know that 90% of those talking here hasn't even seen the inside of a plane talk less of flying in one.

I have used chachangi just once because of the bad tales about their air-crafts , but a situation made me use them once and surprisingly the flight was very ok, infact the from taxi , take off to landing was super smooth, The only airline i have vowed never to use in naija is Dana and those old MD -80s being used.

I have been on chachangi flight many times. One experience I would never forget is one particular flight sometimes in 2009 from Abuja to Lagos. it was the last flight or so on a friday and the flight was fully booked. On that day for the first and last time i saw people taking standing inside a chachangi flight. Two guys who are probably friends of the crew stood at the back of the air craft for the one hour or so journey. I taken chachangi many times after the episode though.

Your experience is very much like mine in 2009 from Owerri to Lagos. Missed my virgin Nigerian flight and needed to reach Lagos same day. Chanchangi happened to be the only flight left departing for Lagos on that day.

Pally, I joined the flight and had the worst and very funny experience on board. Pally see fear as the pilot just dey enter turbulence without warning. An old man seating by my side was just complaining about how useless Nigeria is due to fear. Really felt sorry for him.

He dey ask me wey dey look death for face and dey pray for forgiveness of my sins say "is it good for an old man like him to still be working at this age? I have 2 graduates with no job so I need to maintain my job to feed for them, this country is useless".

Hear prayers everywhere. Shouts of JESUS every minute.

When the plane landed and how na another nightmare. to worsen our plight, the pilot come announce when we land say thank you for flying chanchangi flight bla, bla, bla and we hope you fly with us again, everybody shout GOD forbid.

Since then if na chanchangi be the only flight wey dey, pally i go go back house or find hotel. He who runs will live to fight another day.

i booked an Arik airline to abuja on monday but i didnt book a return flight cos i wasnt sure how long i would stay there.
Luckily for me, i met my boss that same monday and i decided to come back on tuesday.

Tuesday morning:
got to the airport and chachangi was the only airline going to lagos then.
I paid for for 2 ( my colleague and i). after minutes of delay, we got into a really dirty plane,  the plane being dirty is the good part,

we were not up to 30 people in the plane. i found it weird but i kept my cool.
In air, the plane was galloping more than a molue and at a certain point, it start clinging to the right and droping rapidly,   I HAVE NEVER PRAYED SO HARD IN MY LIFE,
I later discovered that chachangi has only one plane and that was the one i entered.

I WANT TO APPEAL TO OTHER FLYERS TO AVOID CHACHANGI,  EVEN IF THEY ARE THE ONLY PLANE FLYING IN THE WORLD.

Send a letter to the regulators from the MD to the head of Inspections.

If you can get the individuals emails, better still. Send it by email and copy in the relevant editors at major newspapers, the Ministry of Aviation and foreign agencies (BBC, VOA).

If they do nothing, the day something happens, your email will be on record and public officials heads should roll if we have a functioning journalism industry and sane government. The foreign media you send it to are guaranteed to attack if something happens. We can't depend on the cretins in Nigeria press.

That means most of you wont be able fly within America.I can tell you that i had the worst flying experience of my life in the US.i.e Maryland-Florida return.At a time on both flights,the plane was almost upside down and at some point in time,the pilot barked from the cockpit that the crew should sit down and there should be no standing up till he gives the go-ahead.Since that experience i swore never to fly within America.Someone then told me its because of the size of the aircraft, it was a small aircraft.

DANA air wey I enter to Lagos almost freaked me out too. today. Very sandy bearing like noises in the engine so bad it was interfering with the public address system. sometimes, odour came out through the a/c vents. i breathed in when the bird struggled to be airborne and only breathed out when we hit terra firma. the plane was a DC - 9 aircraft. Reminds me of the (in)famous DC -10. manufactured 1985. Horrible experience. WHERE ARE THE REGULATORS NOW, at least we dont have stories-that-touch

Flying in Nigeria is terrifying!!!

I went to Abuja in 2001 and on my flight back to Lagos I noticed commotion about 4 rows ahead of me. I saw a guy got up from his seat and walked all the way to the back. Then I saw the guy sitting next to him singing and praying while looking at the guy walking away. Then people started gathering around the guy sitting next to the guy that walked away. I then overheard someone say that the guy’s private is missing and they were checking it to see if it was true. All of a sudden, the guy sitting behind them shouted that his was also missing and we were still about 20 minutes away from landing. Come see how the old and young grabbed and held their “thing”!

It is funny now but wasn’t back then. By the time we taxied to the gate, the pilot had already radioed to some military men that were waiting for all the guys involved.

People that saw the missing people’s private said that there was nothing there expect pubic hair. I didn’t see it myself as I wanted to get as far away from those people ASAP!
